Welcome to People of Color Picture Books Project!

This wiki is meant for childcare workers, librarians, teachers and parents interested in reading and sharing picture books where people of color are featured prominently. This is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all people of color books. Rather, emphasis is placed on finding stories especially appropriate to share with groups of children, five years of age and younger, where people of color characters are shown in contemporary settings.

The books in this wiki...

  • are appropriate to read to children aged five and younger;
  • are devoted to people of color characters, who are the main focuses of the stories;
  • show people of color characters in contemporary settings, as opposed to historic or folkloric settings;
  • are divided based on historic and/or geographic and/or racial categories;
  • contain plot summaries copied from the cataloging-in-publication data found in each book, summaries from the Library of Congress online catalog, if available, or from book jacket flaps.

The lists

The books in the lists below have been included based upon the assumption that they will be shared with a group of children, rather than one-on-one. Thus, books for preschool children aged 3-5 tend to be on the shorter, simpler side, to accommodate the younger end of the age range. Age ranges given are suggestions, only. Books especially appropriate for infants/toddlers are indicated (in green and bolded text) above the relevant titles.

New titles added to this wiki can be found here. Newest books are up top.
